Today, even if you trust the result, you personally have no way to confirm that your own ballot was actually counted. The technology to let every voter check that — without revealing how they voted — exists, but almost no law allows or requires it.

What actually happened

End-to-end verifiability (E2E-V) is real, mature technology, not a wish. Microsoft Research's open-source ElectionGuard implements it: it publishes an encrypted record of every ballot so a voter can confirm their ballot was included and counted, and anyone can verify the overall tally is correct — all while keeping each vote secret (using homomorphic encryption). The gap isn't the technology. It's that almost no jurisdiction's law permits or requires it.

Where it stands today

E2E-V works today and has been used in real pilots; the figure above is so high because the gap is statutory, not technical — current law simply doesn't provide for it.

"Trust the result" vs. "check the result"

Think about the last time you voted. You probably trusted the outcome — but could you prove your own ballot was counted? Almost no one can. You hand over your vote and hope.
