How voters cast a ballot

The voting channels available under current law, each verified against the cited statute.

  • Election dayElection-day in personall

    Polls open 7:00 a.m. and close 8:00 p.m. on election day; hand-marked paper ballot tabulated by precinct optical scanner. Voter ID required since 2018 (§ 48A.10A).

    In-person absentee (early) voting at the county commissioner's office and at satellite absentee voting stations; the early-voting window is 20 days (shortened by SF 413, 2021).

    No-excuse absentee voting by mail — any registered voter may request an absentee ballot from the county commissioner.
