Kommunestyret avgjør hvordan kommunen skal deles inn i stemmekretser. Myndigheten kan delegeres til valgstyret. Valgstyret skal senest 31. mars i valgåret orientere sentral matrikkelmyndighet om endringer i stemmekretsinndelingen.
