Penalties. 157. —(1) Where a person is guilty of an offence under this Act, other than an offence mentioned in subsection (2) , such person shall be liable— ( a ) on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £1,000 or, at the discretion of the court, to imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months or to both such fine and such imprisonment, or ( b ) on conviction on indictment to a fine not exceeding £2,500 or, at the discretion of the court, to imprisonment for a period not exceeding two years or to both such fine and such imprisonment. (2) Where a person is guilty of an offence under sections 133 , 140 , 148 or 153 , such person shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £500 or, at the discretion of the court, to imprisonment for a period not exceeding three months or to both such fine and such imprisonment.
